Joel Hartter

Associate Professor, University of Colorado

Joel is a geographer who specializes in human dimensions of global change. He brings this expertise to the HE team’s ongoing research project in artisanal gold mining in Colombia and Peru. He joined the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Colorado as an associate professor in 2014 after working as an assistant/associate professor at the University of New Hampshire for 6 ½ years. His research program focuses on human behavior, land use/land cover change, population change and migration, conservation and protected area management, and human health. He has active projects in East and Southern Africa, Madagascar, South America, and the Inland Northwest of the US. Joel is also the faculty director for the Masters of the Environment professional graduate degree program. Joel holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Florida, MS in Forest Engineering from Oregon State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
